Men's Soccer History
Team History
The Ravens men’s soccer team has been one of the most successful varsity teams in Carleton’s history. With 11 national championship tournament appearances and four OUA championships, Ravens men’s soccer has been fostering a culture of success for over four decades. Since coming into existence in 1982, the Ravens have staggeringly only missed the playoffs six times.
The Ravens rose to prosperity quickly after their inauguration as a varsity team, qualifying for the national championship tournament in only their 3rd ever season, finishing as the runner-up. After some early playoff losses marred their late 1980s and early 1990s, Carleton went unbeaten in the regular season for the first time in 1996. This is a feat that they have accomplished another three times since then.
The Late nineties and early 2000s marked an era of significant triumph for the Ravens who secured their first OUA championship in 15 years in 1999. This year also marked a return to the national championship tournament, where they would participate in 2002, 2005, and 2008 to round out a productive decade in the 2000s. All of this was accomplished under the guidance of legendary head coach and Ravens Hall-of-Famer Alexander “Sandy” Mackie. With over 190 victories to his name, the winningest coach in Ravens history oversaw the team from 1992 to 2015, leading them to five national championship tournament appearances.
When Mackie departed, Carleton continued its dominance with new head coach and former captain Kwesi Loney. This stretch saw Carleton qualify for the national championship tournament in four consecutive seasons, including winning an OUA championship in 2019.
Marcelo Plada took over the squad in 2023 where he instantly brough Carleton their fourth ever OUA championship that year. Since then, Carleton has continued its regular season dominance of the OUA East and continues to seek the school’s first ever national championship in men’s soccer.
Conference Championships
Carleton has won the OUA men’s soccer championship four times (1984, 2005, 2019, 2023).
National Championships
Carleton has never won a USports men’s soccer national championship. They have appeared in the national championship tournament 11 times, including three 2nd place finishes and one 3rd place finish.
